Winter creeps on in the UK but here in New Zealand we start the summer and so thoughts turn to the great outdoors and what could be, rather than what should have been.
So with a renewed vigour I am going to be pushing for the Pico option this year. This is based around limited funds (whole project to be completed for less than NZ$2000 - $1000 Boat and $1000 refit and kit buying) and simply scaling back to weekend and evening cruising in a Dinghy, something Mirror-esk would be great.
This means that putting the Dinghy to one side I need to look at simpler ways of sailing and what I would be doing for an overnight as well as accommodating our 6 year old, should he want to venture out with his old dad!
So camping gear is such an obvious choice to allow for weekend and day trips. A small boat requires small kit and as soon as you start looking for small kit (in NZ at least) the choice becomes limiting and expensive. cue Alpkit.
This UK based company specialises in making and supplying high quality goods at fair prices and to my joy they deliver into New Zealand! So on the shopping list for me this Christmas is the following..
Alpkit Tarp - £40
Always useful for when the weather takes a turn for the worse and case double up as a boom tent cover if needed.
Bivvy Bag - £35
No room for a tent - this and the Tarp will be great alternative. Would take our little 2 man tent if the buy came along though.
Stove - £35
On a small boat the issue can be cooking and where to place the damn stove. Learning from Alpine climbing the old jet boil, this capable cooker can be rigged to hand from the boom if needed even while luffed up! Not seen one in action? Watch here
Dry Bags - £10 each
While we already have dry bags new ones are always useful. Two 30 litre ones for me. What will hold a lot will hold a little!
Rather impressive for a little over £100 which would rush me well over $500 from the usual NZ suppliers.
So I'll be working on the rest of the idea over the coming weeks and months and hope to have more for you soon, as I search for a suitable vessel.
